India’s T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav has been included in Mumbai’s squad for the upcoming Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, set to begin on November 26. The 17-member team will be led by allrounder Shardul Thakur as Mumbai look to defend their title in the new season.
Suryakumar’s selection comes at a crucial time ahead of India’s home T20I series against South Africa starting December 9. While the Mumbai Indians star delivered a strong IPL performance earlier this year – scoring 717 runs at a strike rate of 167.91 – his international form in 2025 has been concerning. He has managed just 184 runs in 15 T20 innings, averaging 15.33 with a strike rate of 127.77.
India are scheduled to play ten T20Is at home before the T20 World Cup 2026, which they will co-host with Sri Lanka in February-March. The upcoming domestic tournament will provide Suryakumar with much-needed match practice as he aims to regain form.
Shivam Dube, another key India allrounder, has also been included in the squad. Dube has had limited batting opportunities in recent T20Is, facing only 60 balls across six innings for 76 runs this year. The Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy presents a valuable opportunity for him to return to rhythm.
Mumbai enter the tournament as defending champions, having defeated Madhya Pradesh in the 2024-25 final. They will open their campaign against Railways in Lucknow.
