Manisha Kalyan Free-Kick Goal Stuns Fans
India women’s football star Manisha Kalyan produced one of the most memorable moments of the AFC Women’s Asian Cup with a sensational free-kick against Chinese Taipei in Sydney.
The Manisha Kalyan free-kick goal came during India’s crucial group-stage match, where the left-footed attacker curled the ball brilliantly. Her strike took a sharp bend in the air, smashed the underside of the crossbar, and bounced into the net, leaving the goalkeeper helpless.
The goal was initially checked by VAR before being confirmed by the referee, sparking celebrations among the Indian players.
Cristiano Ronaldo Comparison After Stunning Strike
Kalyan’s spectacular effort quickly caught the attention of commentators and fans. During the broadcast, the commentator compared the Manisha Kalyan free-kick goal to the iconic free-kicks taken by Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo, who is also considered one of Kalyan’s favourite players.
The comparison highlighted the precision, power, and technique behind her remarkable strike.
India’s Campaign Ends Despite Moment of Brilliance
Despite the brilliance of Manisha Kalyan’s free-kick goal, India suffered a 3–1 defeat against Chinese Taipei, ending their campaign in the tournament.
India had qualified for the prestigious competition on merit for the first time, but their inability to convert multiple chances in the attacking third proved costly.
Chinese Taipei Takes Early Lead
Chinese Taipei opened the scoring in the 12th minute following a defensive mistake from India. A poor back pass by Sanju allowed J. W. Chen to intercept the ball and square it to Y. H. Su, who easily slotted the ball into an empty net after goalkeeper Elangbam Panthoi Chanu had come off her line.
India attempted to fight back but conceded another goal just before halftime.
Penalty Goal Doubles the Advantage
Chinese Taipei doubled its lead late in the first half after Pyari Xaxa handled the ball inside the penalty box. The referee immediately pointed to the spot.
Y. Y. Hsu took the penalty, and although the shot struck the post, it deflected off the goalkeeper Panthoi and went into the net, giving Chinese Taipei a comfortable lead before the break.
Third Goal Seals India’s Exit
The match was effectively decided in the 77th minute when Yu-Chin Chen made a strong run down the right side and finished past Panthoi to score Chinese Taipei’s third goal.
Although India managed to score through the spectacular Manisha Kalyan free-kick goal, it was not enough to change the result.
Tough Group Stage for the Blue Tigresses
India had earlier lost their group matches against Vietnam and Japan. To qualify for the next stage, the Blue Tigresses needed to defeat Chinese Taipei by at least two goals while hoping for Japan to beat Vietnam.
Japan did its part by defeating Vietnam 4–0, but India’s loss meant it was eliminated from the competition.
A Highlight of the Tournament
While India’s campaign ended in disappointment, Manisha Kalyan’s free-kick goal remains one of the standout moments of the tournament.
The strike showcased her technical ability and reaffirmed her status as one of the brightest rising stars in Indian women’s football.
