Samson, Kishan, and Abhishek power India to 255 as Bumrah’s four-wicket spell seals a dominant victory. India win third T20 World Cup title after a commanding 96-run victory over the New Zealand national cricket team in the final of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.
In front of a packed home crowd, the India national cricket team delivered a clinical performance with both bat and ball. Half-centuries from Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Abhishek Sharma helped India post a massive total of 255 for 5 before a brilliant spell from Jasprit Bumrah sealed the emphatic win.
The victory also made India the first team in tournament history to successfully defend the T20 World Cup title.
India’s explosive batting sets up a massive total
After being asked to bat first, India wasted little time in attacking the New Zealand bowlers. Abhishek Sharma provided the early fireworks, smashing a rapid 52 and taking advantage of the powerplay overs.
Ishan Kishan continued the momentum with an aggressive knock of 54, keeping the scoring rate above 12 runs per over and placing the New Zealand bowlers under immense pressure.
However, the star of the innings was Sanju Samson. The wicketkeeper-batter delivered a superb 89, anchoring the innings while maintaining a blistering scoring rate. His knock highlighted a remarkable run of form during the tournament.
Despite a three-wicket effort from Jimmy Neesham, New Zealand struggled to contain India’s aggressive batting lineup. By the end of 20 overs, India had posted an imposing 255 for 5, one of the highest totals in a T20 World Cup final.
Bumrah dismantles New Zealand’s chase
Chasing a daunting target, New Zealand required an extraordinary start but quickly fell behind the required run rate.
Tim Seifert fought hard with a well-made 52, while captain Mitchell Santner contributed 43. However, consistent wickets prevented the visitors from building any significant partnerships.
Jasprit Bumrah delivered a match-winning performance with the ball, finishing with outstanding figures of 4 for 15 in his four overs. His precise off-cutters and variations proved nearly impossible for the New Zealand batters to handle.
Spinner Axar Patel also played a key role with three wickets as New Zealand were eventually bowled out for 159.
Historic moment for Indian cricket
With this victory, India win third T20 World Cup title and successfully defended their championship in front of their home crowd in Ahmedabad. The triumph also helped erase memories of the disappointment at the same venue during the 2023 ICC Cricket World Cup final loss to the Australia national cricket team.
For New Zealand, the defeat marked yet another heartbreak in ICC finals, continuing a difficult trend for the team on the biggest stage.
India’s dominant performance in the final underlined their strength in modern T20 cricket and secured their place among the most successful teams in the tournament’s history.
