The much-awaited IPL 2026 will kick off on March 28. The organizers have scheduled the final for May 31, slightly later than the original March 26 plan.
The league delayed the full schedule due to pending assembly elections in Assam, Tamil Nadu, and West Bengal. These delays have affected confirmations for several venues.
Sources say the IPL initially informed franchises on December 15, 2025, a day before the last player auction, about the March 26 start. However, the league has internally decided to move the start to March 28 to accommodate election-related uncertainties.
IPL 2026 Schedule Delayed Due to State Elections
The IPL Governing Council (GC) is expected to finalize the full schedule next week. The delay is mainly because the Election Commission of India has not announced poll dates for Assam, West Bengal, and Tamil Nadu.
This affects key IPL venues. Kolkata and Chennai host the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Chennai Super Kings (CSK), respectively.
Guwahati in Assam serves as a secondary venue for the Rajasthan Royals (RR).
Historically, during years when India holds general or assembly elections, the IPL schedule has been released in parts. The GC is likely to follow a similar approach this year, either announcing the schedule in phases or waiting for election dates before finalizing matches in these states.
RCB Home Matches in IPL 2026 Under Review
A major talking point ahead of IPL 2026 is the home venue for the Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB). Eleven fans tragically died in a stampede during RCB’s victory celebrations at M Chinnaswamy Stadium last June.
RCB and the Karnataka State Cricket Association are deciding whether to play the team’s seven home matches in Bengaluru or move them to another venue.
Alternate venues under consideration include Navi Mumbai, Raipur, and Pune, as the franchise weighs fan safety and logistical concerns. Officials are expected to make the decision soon, and it will also determine the venue for the tournament’s opening match, featuring the defending champions, RCB.
What Fans Can Expect
With the start date now confirmed, cricket fans can mark their calendars for March 28, 2026, as the action-packed season promises thrilling matches, top-tier performances, and intense competition across India. Fans of RCB, KKR, CSK, and RR will be particularly attentive to the venue confirmations in the coming weeks.
IPL 2026 is gearing up to be another exciting chapter in the history of the Indian Premier League, blending world-class cricket with the unique energy of Indian stadiums and fans.
