Josh Inglis has made a strong case for being picked for Australia’s Ashes team after scoring a great, unbeaten century for a Cricket Australia XI against England Lions. This has added to the interest in talks about the team’s batting order.
The CA XI chased down 232 runs with eight wickets in hand at Lilac Hill. The wicketkeeper-batter hit 125 off 107 balls, including 15 fours and two sixes. Inglis showed he could switch gears and deliver under pressure with a dominant win of 341 & 235/2 over 299 & 273. This came just days after Travis Head’s innings in Perth made headlines.
Head Promotion Raises more Questions About the Reshuffle
Travis Head amazing 123 as a fill-in opener in the first Test has led some people to wonder if he could move up to the top of the order for good. This move would probably end Usman Khawaja‘s great Test career and leave a hole in the middle order that Inglis may now be perfectly positioned to fill.
If Khawaja’s back spasms go away in time, selectors are likely to keep him for the Gabba Test. But since there is still some uncertainty, Inglis’ most recent statement couldn’t have come at a better time.
Inglis Shows that he can do a lot of things after a broken build-up
Inglis was let go from the Test squad to find his form with the CA XI after a disjointed preparation. He missed the India ODIs because of a calf injury, had only modest T20I returns, and made only one Sheffield Shield appearance (4 and 28). He said it very clearly.
In Monday’s innings, Head’s explosive play in Perth was echoed, and Inglis drove the chase at a fast pace that reminded me of modern white-ball influence. His century also brought back memories of his first Test match in Galle, where he did well against spin in the middle order. He later played at No. 4 when Steven Smith missed the West Indies Test because of a finger injury, showing that he can play in many different positions.
Other People Who Want to Win
If Khawaja is not available or the selectors decide to make a change, there are still a few names in the running:
Beau Webster, who just missed the first Test when Cameron Green came back at No. 6;
Mitchell Marsh, who will play for Western Australia in the Sheffield Shield at the MCG;
Cameron Green, whose move back to the middle order gives the team more options in terms of structure
Jhye Richardson, on the other hand, continued his recovery from shoulder surgery by bowling 20 overs without taking a wicket for the CA XI. Selectors hope he will play later in the series and are sure he will play for Australia A during the Gabba Test week.
Names of Test Squad Members for England Lions
The England Lions had a few players from their Test team on the field, like Matthew Potts, Will Jacks, and Jacob Bethell, but they were outmuscled by a lively CA XI team. Potts was the best player for the Lions, taking 3 for 49. Gay (78) and Kellaway (59) fought back with the bat.
As the pressure builds for the Ashes and Australia’s top order comes under fire, Inglis’ timely hundred keeps him at the center of the selection debate as the series moves to Brisbane.
